A "volatile" crack cocaine addict made his mother's life a misery with his violent and unpredictable behaviour, including assaulting her during a heated and bad-tempered argument with his brother.
Serial offender Jon Barrett later kicked a police officer in the chest after turning nasty when he was put into the back of a police van. He was "hooked" on crack cocaine and had "struggled with addiction his whole adult life" but he was now keen to tackle it, Hull Crown Court heard.

Barrett, 36, of no fixed address, admitted offences of assault, causing criminal damage and assaulting a police officer as an emergency worker on January 12 last year.

Maya Hanson, prosecuting, said that Barrett's mother was at home at 5.35pm when she suddenly heard raised voices and went to see what was going on. Barrett was "fronting up" to his brother and they were shouting at each other.
The brothers continued arguing and, because the situation was escalating, their mother shouted for her partner downstairs to ring the police. Barrett picked up and angrily threw a heavy box object at a wall. His mother was hit during the incident, causing instant pain to her body. The assault on her was reckless and he was not aiming to injure her, the court heard.
Her partner managed to get Barrett downstairs but the arguing and shouting continued. Barrett got up and punched a TV that was on a TV unit, causing damage. He left the house and armed response police arrived. They had been called in because it was originally claimed that a weapon was used during the confrontation. The prosecution did not proceed with this part of the case, however.
